Course DescriptionThis course explores the unconventional world of artist's books in a variety of ways building on basic structures of folded paper and simple sewing techniques. Participants will produce a number of structures which will serve as models for combining and re-combining the various possibilities. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created numerous examples of pop-ups, accordion and concertina structures, flag books, origami books, hinged structures, pamphlet and hard cover books, & c. Discussions will include choosing papers, consideration of grain direction, glues, pastes and adhesives, and proper use of tools and materials. No experience required.
NotesThis course can either be taken for credit or clock hours. Clock hours are available under CEU 3825.
- Olfa or other retractable blade
- bone folder
- metal ruler (no longer than 18”)
- self-healing mat (no larger than 11” x 17”)
- glue stick(s)
- 3” paint roller (the kind for painting small areas)
- shallow, covered plastic container that fits the 3” roller
Note: wear clothing that can get dirty or get glue on it, or bring an apron instructor to provide all other materials and supplies.
