Course Description

Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916), was an influential Danish painter who worked at the turn of the century. In this lecture series we will examine the many influences upon Hammershoi to put his work into context. The days will be divided into Hammershoi's four main genres: portraits, interior spaces, landscapes and cityscapes. We will start by looking at a comparative history of the subject matter from Dutch Baroque painters who provided inspiration such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, continue to other late 19th century painters, thoroughly study the work of Hammershoi in this context and look at other contemporary Scandinavian painters such as Swedish painters Anders Zorn and August Strinderg, Norwegians Edvard Munch and Harriet Backer and Finish painter Askeli Gallen-Kallela.
