Course Description

This class will explore a variety of book binding models, beginning with simple constructions and working up to more complicated structures. Students will learn simple styles like the single-sheet book, accordion fold, single-section pamplet stitch on the way to making more complicated bindings like Japanese stab, Coptic and ultimately a cloth covered, case bound book. Students will develop hand skills and become familiar with binding tools and techniques; discuss traditional materials for bookbinding and explore adhesives, paper types and uses, as well as grain for paper and book cloth. Through each binding iteration, we will learn the foundations of traditional bookmaking, and explore ways to challenge those interpretations to produce one-of-a-kind artist books.
