Course Description

This is a survey course of American history from 1877 (the end of Reconstruction) up to the War of Terror. It is centered around the award winning "Transforming America" telecourse produced by the Dallas Community College District. This documentary-style video is coupled with the textbook, "The American Promise" and the supplementary reader, "Reading the American Past". These provide an overview of our nation's history which studies how current issues of freedom, equality, and national identity developed from the late-nineteenth century. This course offers a perspective of history not only from various historians, but also from the people of the time, ranging from industrialists to immigrants and allows participants to see and hear history while understanding how the past becomes the present.
