Course Description

This course is designed for the generalist teacher and will guide participants toward helping students see the connections between visual art and mathematical practices. Participants will be guided through projects to help K-8 students learn basic art skills that can be applied toward math learning outcomes. Standards-based activities will increase participants’ understanding of the meaningful connections to the Math Common Core State Standards found throughout the NCAS Anchor Standards – creating, connecting, responding, and presenting. Integrating art and math activities are constructed to improve retention of key concepts and vocabulary. Intensive hands-on break-out sessions will be presented by experienced artists and learning specialists. Assessment strategies will be presented and all activities are planned to be class-time efficient. This course does meet the STEM requirement for certification.

Learner Outcomes

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes:
(1) To engage students with specific hands-on art activities connected to mathematical concepts.
(2) To make known mathematicians who work as professional artists.
(3) To introduce teachers to the Schack Art Center spring exhibit following the same theme as a possible field trip opportunity, bringing the year of art + math learning full circle.
(4) To provide a standards base and information on how to effectively embed visual art concepts pertaining to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math, and the newly adopted (March 2017) WA State National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) into instruction.

This course can be taken for either credit or clock hours. Credit is available under EDCT 5640.
