Course Description

This course combines two concepts: math workshops with small group instruction and writing instruction to promote math skills. Math workshops focus on engaging all students in rigorous “math exchanges” by focusing on short, focused sessions that are responsive to the needs of the specific group and designed for meaningful, guided reflection. Students can also learn to construct, explore, represent, refine, connect, and reflect on mathematical ideas. Evaluating students’ writing about math provides a window to students’ thinking and informs instructional decisions. The course provides practical advice about how to support writing in math, as well as many specific examples of writing prompts and tasks that require high-cognitive demand.
