Course Description

Participants will explore the book White Rage by Professor and Chair of African American Studies at Emory University, Carol Anderson. Starting with Reconstruction and working through Obama’s presidency, Anderson argues that every time African Americans have made full participation in our democracy, white reaction has fueled a deliberate, relentless rollback of any gains. She specifically distinguishes between the individual acts of hatred and racism that often dominate discussions of race and ongoing systemic oppression which prevents African Americans from full participatory citizenship.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Explored the systemic, tactical responses that arise in opposition to moments of progress for African-Americans throughout U.S. history
  • Engaged with others to discuss the historical and current manifestations of African-American oppression and resistance
  • Identified social norms and beliefs that contribute to and justify the perpetuation of legalized discrimination
  • Applied what they have learned to create a call to action for change around this issue
