Course DescriptionPrepare to be seduced by the rich colors and luxurious, tactile nature of hand-dyed textiles! In this class, we’ll begin by looking at folk artists and 20th century modernists - both use shape and color masterfully as dominant compositional elements. A series of creative exercises will lead you intuitively towards a personal visual
vocabulary all your own, expressed first in cut-paper collage. We’ll translate our collages into textile art using hand applique methods including raw and turned-edge. Cottons and wools in warm and cool tones will be provided for you, as will natural materials for dyeing a custom palette of threads. You’ll also get a kit with the
recommended needles, pins, and pattern transfer materials. Several approaches for finishing and displaying your textile art will be shared. Ideal for painters or collage artists looking for a new means of expression.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Students will be able to develop technique and expressive impact using the medium of textile art
- Students will be able to build critical and creative thinking using sketchbook exercises to practice new skills and concepts
- Students will be able to express their learning orally, visually, and in writing
