Course Description

This course teaches the skills and content included in the Microsoft® Office Specialist (MOS) Excel® Associate certification test.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to perform fundamental tasks in Microsoft® Excel® in these domains:

  • Manage Worksheets and Workbooks
  • Manage Data Cells and Ranges
  • Manage Tables and Table Data
  • Perform Operations by using Formulas and Functions
  • Manage Charts


This course is offered for Continuing Education Units. It will be posted on a clock hour transcript and will not apply to an Undergraduate Degree.

A PC with a Microsoft® Operating System is strongly recommended. The certification exam will be taken on a device with the Microsoft® operating system, and some of the features and user interface procedures are different on Apple® computers. Students must use a mouse. (Note: The exam, if taken at SPU, requires this.)

Students must use Excel® in Microsoft® 365®, which is available through SPU’s Computer Information Services department. You can download the software from the SPU Download Center or contact help@spu.edu for IT assistance.

Prior to the first class, you must create and register an account with Certiport. Detailed instructions are available in Appendix C.

There are no required readings for this course. However, many study guides are available for purchase and may help you prepare for the exam. The official MOS Study Guide for the MO-200 Exam is available ($20-30).

No refunds will be given once the course has begun, and no withdrawals will be accepted after the final session.
