Course Description

This course is designed to introduce the practicing counselor to the practice of online counseling. Intended for both school and community counselors, this course will address professional, legal, and ethical issues associated with on-line counseling practice. This course will also include an introduction to and overview of the micro-credential and program considerations.

Learner Outcomes

This course offers an overview of best practice recommendations in the field related to online counseling services. An overview of ethical standards specific to online counseling will be provided. By the end of the course, students will:

  1. Develop and understanding of the microcredential program and expectations
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of professional counseling competencies related to providing counseling services in an online format
  3. Integrate guidelines for ethical practice congruent with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and the American Counselor Association (ACA)


Utilizes Canvas, Zoom and Google Sites to integrate technology throughout this course. Course instruction will include Canvas online resources and discussion board forums, posted video lectures and synchronous class meetings via zoom.
