EDRD 5827 - Children's Books: Wordless Wonders
Course Description
Wordless books give students an opportunity to improve their reading and writing skills by practicing inferring, building an understanding of the relationship between pictures and words and identifying the story structure. At your own pace you will explore wordless books that give K-8 students of all levels and abilities, learning opportunities, from labeling pictures to strengthening their understanding of story and plot. Grades K-5.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
- Be able to Identify the characteristics and qualities of good children's literature and how wordless books tell a story.
- Understand strategies for using children's literature to engage students of all ages and abilities.
- Have become familiar with techniques for using storyline to draw out meanings.
- Be able to design multi-curricula lessons & projects for wordless books that are literature based.
- Have learned how current media resources can be a valuable resource in learning about children's wordless books.
- Have learned how to choose wordless books and decide how to fit them into the curriculum.
- Have gathered ideas for using the best in children's literature with students of diverse needs.
- Be able to choose graphic organizers, story webs, event maps to retell the book.
- Have learned how to find concept books that focus on a particular theme but still have a story to tell.
