EDCT 5685 - Smart but Scattered Teens-Helping Teens Reach Their Potential

Course Description

This course is designed to take an in-depth look at research-supported strategies used to help promote teens’ independence by building their executive skills or brain based abilities to get organized, stay focused, and control impulses and emotions. The text looks at the parents roll and relationship with the child but we will pay closer attention to the relationship and implications the teenager will have in the classroom.You will read and learn stepby-step strategies to help guide your students to live up to their potential now and in the future by teaching them strategies and skills to develop their executive functions while also creating a stronger relationship with them. Grades 6-12.

Learner Outcomes

Through reading “Smart but Scattered Teens,” students will:

Reflect upon their own teaching practices with students that are struggling with executive functioning skills and set goals for their teaching
They will apply Best Practices to their teaching and learning instruction as they learn new strategies.
They will complete questionnaires, think critically and evaluate strategies for students as they plan lessons that incorporate research-based strategies while investigating the interwoven nature of executive strategies for struggling students.
