Course Description

Educators will have the opportunity to hear directly from seven published authors and illustrators and learn about their lives; participate in conversations about the world of children's literature; gain insight into their writing process and books; and learn practical teaching strategies for using this material in the classroom. This course will give you the opportunity to grow professionally as you immerse yourself in the fabulous world of children’s books.

 

 

Learner Outcomes

Participants will

  • Gain information about the background of each of the authors/illustrators.
  • Understand how the individual author's background influences his writing.
  • Identify the characteristics and qualities of good children's literature in relation to meeting the needs of today’s diverse classroom.
  • Plan activities for the classroom using books written by each author and input from the author.
  • Develop classroom materials based on the class, which will motivate students in the area of reading and writing.
  • Learn about children’s literature awards.
  • Find out how the Internet can be a valuable resource in learning about children's books and their authors.
  • Identify the characteristics and qualities of good children's literature.

Notes

This course can be taken for either 3 credits or 10 clock hours (1 CEU). Clock hours are available under CEU 4016.


For over 30 years, TINT has been proud to bring nationally recognized authors and illustrators of popular children’s books, such as: Mac Barnett, Dan Gemeinhart, Joanna Ho, Tracey Baptiste, Molly Idle, James Ponti and Gennifer Choldenko, to share ways to use their books to motivate and engage children.

The registration deadline is February 12, 2025 by the end of the day.


Refund Policy: Withdrawals submitted online through SPU prior to the first class session will receive a 100% refund. Withdrawals submitted online within 7 days of the first class session will receive a 95% refund. Withdrawals received after that point will not receive a refund and no withdrawals will be accepted after the last class session.
