Course Description

The six-part Liberatory Leadership in Education is a professional development series for all school and district leaders and educators. Grounded in the Network for EdWork’s Liberation Pedagogy™ framework, programming is delivered via two cohorts, Education EnCounter (for BIPOC participants) and Ally Engagement (for white ally participants). The series includes racial affinity work alongside collaborative engagement. Achieving racial equity in schools requires an understanding of the intersections of race, power, and privilege. The framework supports educators and leaders to strengthen their racial literacy, identify and replace oppressive practices that manifest across the education system.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Analyze and recognize racial inequities and inequalities across the education system, a system not designed for BIPOC students, educators, or leaders
  • Develop a self-awareness of internalized oppression and bias
  • Exercise racial literacy to undo oppressive and supremacist practices in education
  • Identify, imagine, and apply components of liberatory practices to our position and positionality in education
  • Engage in reflective protocols and participatory learning in both collaborative and racial affinity spaces

Notes

All sessions are virtual and participatory. Participants will engage in group exercises and reflective practices through structured activities and discussions. They will also end with a personal project (Philosophy for Liberatory Leadership), which addresses their professional role, positionality, and application of racial literacy to identify and imagine a liberatory education system.
