Course Description

Operations management is a very broad term that can be defined as adding value for the customer by effectively and efficiently managing the transformation process. This course is designed to introduce participants to the major components of operations strategy including operations strategy for both manufacturing and service firms; product design, forecasting, planning and scheduling; process planning, quality management, supply chain and logistics management, lean management; capacity planning and layout; work systems design, and inventory control.  This course emphasizes the application of these concepts within the framework of Christian faith. It also focuses more on understanding how to interpret analysis for decision making rather than understanding the theory behind some of the calculations.

Learner Outcomes

 Upon completion of the course participants should be able to:

  • Explain the role of operations management and the use of the transformational model in both manufacturing and service organizations
  • Evaluate the importance of market needs and operational capabilities (productivity, workflow, and quality) in creating a business strategy that creates a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Analyze operation processes from a variety of different perspectives
  • Explain quality management and apply continuous quality improvement principles to business operations
  • Understand the purpose and value of supply chain management and its application in different types of organizational settings
  • Apply design principles in developing products, determining appropriate facility locations, and facility layouts
  • Identify the critical factors involved with inventory control systems.
  • Use forecasting techniques to plan and manage resources for production
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues in operations management from the lens of a faith-based perspective
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate operation management issues and recommendations through written communication

Notes

This is an asynchronous online class with a structured starting and ending date. It has no face-to-face, in person meetings. It is designed for students to be self-managing learners who pace their learning. Participants will have responsibility for using the material provided in Canvas and the textbook to accomplish the learning objectives of the course primarily on their own with some coaching from the instructor. Participants may work through the assignments at their own pace, but should try to complete one module per week to complete the course within the designated time frame.
