The Center for Professional Education: Endorsements 

SPU's endorsement program requires students to successfully complete coursework that is continually being aligned with the most recent state competencies. The program is designed to prepare teachers with the content and pedagogy skills necessary to demonstrate a positive impact on student learning. 

The Center for Professional Education offers the following endorsements: 

  • ELL and Bilingual: Equips you with the knowledge and skills to appreciate and effectively teach diverse learners. 
  • Health Fitness: Prepares you to implement fitness programs that promote lifelong health and fitness habits in students. 
  • Library Media: Prepares you to be a literacy and media leader in your educational settings. 
  • Reading: Provides the opportunity for you to learn and apply current research on effective reading strategies. 
  • Special Education: Prepares you with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to help exceptional students learn.

Biology; Bilingual Education; Chemistry; Designated World Languages; Earth and Space Science; Elementary Education; English Language Arts; Environmental and Sustainability Education; Family and Consumer Sciences; History; Math; Middle Level Humanities; Middle Level Mathematics; Middle Level Science; Music – Choral, General, Instrumental; Physics; Social Studies; Theater Arts; and Visual Arts.

Several options are available to earn your endorsement. Visit the Professional Educator Standards Board to determine which pathway is applicable for you to add a second endorsement. This will depend on the current endorsement(s) you hold. 

Pathway 1  

Granted by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for adding an endorsement in a closely aligned field:  

  • Pass WEST-E/NES in new content area
  • Apply directly to OPSI for additional endorsement

Pathway 2 

For candidates pursuing an endorsement in a related field, please review Program Requirements below: 

  • Apply to the SPU Endorsement Program (
  • Pass the WEST-E/NES in new content area (
  • Complete EDCN 5730: Field Experience and Pedagogy Assessment* 

Pathway 3   

For candidates pursuing an endorsement in an unrelated field, please review the Program Requirements below: 

  • Apply to the SPU Endorsement Program ( 
  • Complete required program of study 
  • Pass the WEST-E/NES in new area (
  • Complete EDCN 5730: Field Experience and Pedagogy Assessment*

*EDCN 5730: Field Experience and Pedagogy Assessment 

In order to be eligible for Field Experience, the following MUST be completed: 

  • Admitted to the endorsement program 
  • All required coursework complete 
  • Official WEST-E/NES score(s) submitted to SPU ( 
  • Field Experience will be offered during Autumn (September-December), Winter (January-March), and Spring (March-June) 

Complete all (Pathway 2 or Pathway 3) program requirements. Then, you must notify the endorsement coordinator to be considered for the next applicable Field Experience cohort. Please keep in mind the following deadlines:** 

AUTUMN FIELD EXPERIENCE: express intent by July 31st 
WINTER FIELD EXPERIENCE: express intent by October 31st 
SPRING FIELD EXPERIENCE: express intent by January 31st 

**However, cohorts often fill quickly so it is at the candidate’s advantage to notify intent as early as possible (90 days recommended). Once a cohort is full the candidate will be placed on a wait list and will only be admitted if a space becomes available.
