Requirements for CPE Instructors
SPU's Center for Professional Education (CPE) is made up of exceptional teachers, administrators, and educational consultants. If you would like to become a CPE Instructor, you must submit an application along with a course proposal.
Qualifications and Application
Becoming a CPE Instructor requires:
- At minimum, a master's degree and expertise in the field of teaching, either through academic preparation or life experience. (Instructors approved to teach only non-credit or CEU (clock hour) courses are not necessarily required to have a master's degree.)
- A completed and signed CPE Instructor Application (PDF).
- A CPE course form for your proposed course(s). For more information about how to submit a course proposal, visit:
- Your official university transcript of your master's or higher degree on file at SPU's School of Education Center for Professional Education.
Your résumé and curriculum vitae are welcome, but your signed application and official transcript must be on file.
Request your official transcripts from the institution that granted your highest degree when you submit your first course proposal to the Center for Professional Education. Have your transcript sent directly to SPU. Seattle Pacific will retain your transcript in the adjunct faculty files for as long as you offer courses through SPU. Your official transcripts become the property of Seattle Pacific and cannot be photocopied or returned.
Instructor Application Review
CPE Instructor applications are reviewed by the Director. If you are approved, the Center for Professional Education will keep your application and transcript on file. CPE Instructors may teach credit courses approved on a course-by-course basis.
Your status as a CPE Instructor lasts for as long as you continue to offer a course(s) through Seattle Pacific University, although an application update is required every two years. CPE Instructor status does not accrue toward regular SPU faculty status or promotion and may not be accumulated for tenure, sabbaticals, or full-time faculty benefits.
General information about the role and responsibilities of CPE Instructors can be found in the CPE Instructor Handbook (PDF).
