Course Description

This course provides carefully structured theoretical and applied instruction in crisis intervention skills for use in reclaiming children and youth involved in patterns of self-defeating behavior. Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) is applicable with troubled and at risk students in residential and day treatment, special education, alternative schools, public school guidance and inclusion programs, and in mental health and juvenile justice programs. The course provides 16 specific competencies for using crisis as a teaching and therapeutic opportunity with students showing six different patterns of self-defeating behavior. This course features an interactive format with direct instruction, group activities, individual reflection activities, and role-plays. The information is relevant to all school employees.

Course Outline

Day 1:

  • Introduction to LSCI
  • The LSCI Conflict Cycle
  • The Adult's Role in Breaking the Conflict Cycle
  • The Structure of LSCI

Day 2:

  • The Structure of LSCI (Drain OFF and Timeline Focus)
  • Red Flad Intervention**
  • Reality Check Intervention**

Day 3:

  • Why LSCI Works: Alignment with Neuroscience and Trauma Informed Practices
  • The Primary Importance of Positive Relationships
  • The Psychological Worlds of Young People in Stressful Situations
  • Universal Concerns for Youth Under Stress
  • The Helping Process and Potential Pitfalls

Day 4:

  • The New Tools Intervention**
  • Regulate and Restore Intervention**
  • Peer Manipulation Intervention**
  • Benign Confrontation
  • Optional: Off-site networking event after Thursday's training

Day 5:

  • Review Skits 
  • Group Final Interviews: Participants Complete a Full Interview
  • Individual Final Exam: Multiple Choice, Short Answer, and Essay

**For each of these sections, participants will engage in role plays after receiving instruction and model examples of each intervention.

 

 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will have learned:
  • A systematic, six-stage process to move from stress and conflict to learning opportunities.
  • Relationship-building, brain-based de-escalation skills.
  • How to utilize trauma-informed intervention strategies for reaching out to young people.
