Course Description

This course explores the science of movement as it relates to Health and Wellness, specifically the Physical aspect of Wellness. Topics include Anatomy, Physiology, Human Movement, Biomechanics, Physics, and Motor Learning / Motor Control as they relate to K-12 Physical Education courses. 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss why it is important to include Anatomy and Physiology concepts in Physical Education classes.
  • Use common terms and medical terminology to identify bodily structures and functions related to human movement.
  • Identify and describe the role(s) that bones of the skeleton play in human movement.
  • Identify major ligaments and the role(s) of ligaments in human movement.
  • Identify the three types of muscles in the human body.
  • Identify major muscles used in human movement.
  • Identify major tendons and the role(s) of tendons in human movement.
  • Describe how joints move.
  • Identify Muscle Origin, Insertion, and Action.
  • Discuss how lever systems effect human movement.
  • Describe the concept of Sliding Filament Theory.
  • Describe the concept of Muscle Length Tension Relationship.
  • Identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the heart and lungs.
  • Describe the role that ATP plays in human movement.
  • Describe and differentiate in the three energy systems.
  • Describe the concept of VO2.
  • Describe how the Nervous System functions in human movement.
  • Discuss Motor Learning and Motor Control in terms of their contribution to human movement.

Course is self-paced. Completion time: up to one year from date of enrollment (Note exception below):

NOTE: Students interested in completing this course as a prerequisite for PES 5070 or PES 5065 must enroll eight weeks prior to the start of their desired course and submit their work 10 days prior to the course beginning, to allow adequate time for completion and grading of PES 5031 content.


Refund Policy: Withdrawals submitted online through SPU within 7 days of enrollment will receive a 95% refund. Withdrawals received after that point will not receive a refund and no withdrawals will be accepted after the completion deadline for the course.
