Course Description

Participants in this course will receive daily instruction in Kodaly pedagogy, musicianship, folk music and classroom materials, conducting, and choir. Participants will learn to design lesson plans for elementary-aged students (with a focus on kindergarten and first grade), in which children maximize their skill development while joyfully making music. The course will also introduce participants to folk songs, singing games, and choral repertoire appropriate for children from kindergarten through eighth grade. In addition participants will improve musicianship skills and the artistry of their conducting.

Learner Outcomes

Each participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of Kodaly philosophy and educational principles through demonstration and written assignments including:

  • Rote teaching of songs and games
  • The development of lesson plans (yearly, monthly, daily)
  • Methodological sequencing of musical concepts and elements for Kindergarten and lower primary grades
  • The development of children's singing abilities, peer-teaching practicum and development of age-appropriate repertoire

Each participant will be able to demonstrate an increasing level of competence on a daily basis in aural and written music skills
