Course Description

In this course we will investigate what it means for children to learn and understand math: understand place value, the structure of our base ten number system, and the meaning of the four operations. We'll take a look at how children learn, and reflect back on how we, ourselves developed our early math skills. We'll take a look at some of the better practices in use in schools today. This investigation will help us understand how tasks and classroom practices can be structured to elicit student thinking and how the learning environment can support the development of students' mathematical ideas and identities.
