Course Description

The goal of this course is for participants to develop their understandings of the Orff Schulwerk approach and its application to the classroom. It is acknowledged that Orff Schulwerk is not a method, prescribing steps to be taken for music instruction, but rather a set of ideas and tools that each teacher adapts and modifies to best meet the needs of the children in their care. This is an approach to music education that celebrates possibility through singing, dancing, playing instruments and working the spoken word. It is understood that this course will merely scratch the surface of the potential for Orff Schulwerk in the classroom and begin students down the path of this approach to teaching music and movement. It is the hope of the instructors that students will continue to explore diverse approaches to the Schulwerk and other pedagogies and seek additional study through workshops, conferences, and advanced courses.
