Course Description

Designed for participants who have a rudimentary knowledge of music theory. Participants will receive daily instruction in conducting gesture, rehearsal methods that blend the Kodaly philosophy into the choral setting, and score analysis techniques through repertoire suitable for elementary and children's choirs in a collaborative, choir lab format. Students also participate in a choir under the direction of a master choral conductor.

Learner Outcomes

Participants will develop basic conducting skills and rehearsal techniques with appropriate repertoire, as well as experience the direction of a master conductor. Specifically, by the end of the course, participants will have developed skills in the following areas:

  • Physical gesture
  • Preparation of octavos
  • Rehearsal strategies
  • Facility with the following methodological tools:
    • Moveable do with la-based minor
    • Glover-Curwen handsigns
    • Rhythm syllables
    • Use of the tuning fork
