Course Description

This course is designed to introduce and prepare instructors in methods of teaching strength and conditioning programs. The course explores the scientific principles related to various aspects of resistance training and how they apply to children and youths. A "hands-on" approach will be used to integrate theoretical and practical application. The course will consider both biological and chronological age in the selection and implementation of various strength and conditioning techniques. The course will include, but not be limited to: the comparison of free weights with fixed machine based equipment; strength training techniques; the application of speed agility and quickness training; the suitability of Olympic lifting techniques; and the suitability of Plyometric training.

Notes

Students admitted to a School of Education Certificate or endorsement program have priority registration for this course. Non-admitted students may be administratively dropped with a full refund prior to the first class session if space is not available.

Prerequisites

A C or better in PES 5051 "Foundations and Methods of Teaching Health Fitness". Students who register for this course without a grade of C or better in PES 5051 posted to their transcript will be automatically dropped.
