Course Description

Feeling like guided reading isn't increasing your student's reading skills? Wondering if they are actually reading during independent reading time? This class will help you to use assessment data to balance both small group and individual needs. We will take a fresh look at the different types of small group possibilities; guided reading groups, strategy groups, one on one conferences, novel studies and reading partnerships. This will help you to determine when and how to teach each type. You will be more confident when your students are actively reading during independent reading and using the skills you taught them with the strategies examined in "No More Reading Without Support." This course is perfect whether you are teaching a workshop model or a core reading program since each type has a small group and independent reading component . Grades 1-6.

Learner Outcomes

This course will familiarize teachers with different types of small group structures; their purposes and uses. Teachers will develop a plan for engaging students during independent reading, book clubs, and reading partnerships. Finally, they will choose an organizational tool to track their groups, and evaluate assessment data to determine student's reading needs.
