CEU 3999 - Conversational Solfege Level 3: Upper Level Teacher Certification Course

Course Description

In Conversational Solfege Level 3 Feierabend expands the scope of his music reading sequence to advance upper elementary, middle and high school performing ensembles to further converse in the language of music by EAR first and followed by reading at sight and then writing music. This course will continue to investigate methods, techniques, and materials appropriate for continuing the development of music literacy using more advanced rhythm and melodic content in upper level general music, as well as vocal and instrumental ensembles. In addition, teaching harmony and improvisation will be presented in major, minor, aeolian, dorian and mixolydian. Teachers will address introducing pick up notes in duple and triple; reading in a variety a meter signatures; expanding beyond the DO hexachord to utilize the full staff and ledger lines; experiencing a pathway to introduce improvising by ear first before composing in major and minor as well as aeolian, mixolydian and dorian modes as well as expanding past reading in keys F, G and D major to add Bb, Eb and A major and d, e, b-flat, g,c, and f minor.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Apply a sequence of skills to tonal and rhythmic content appropriate for middle school and high school.
• Develop skills at creating logical and varied lesson plans which give evidence to short and long-range goals.
• Develop skills at understanding harmony and improvisation using solfege.
• Understand modal tonalities and harmonies.

This course can either be taken for credit or clock hours. Credit is available under EDMU 5621.
