Course Description

This course is designed for participants who have registered for EDRD 5844 "Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators Lecture Series" and want to earn the optional 4th credit. The books written and illustrated for children can be used as powerful tools for teaching. In this course you will learn how to select books that are the best for your individual purpose and how to share them with students in a engaging way that will leave your students inspired to be active readers and inspired writers.  You will also learn how to pick books that are culturally responsive and that will empower students by helping them become more immersed and motivated readers.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Gain an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures through children’s literature and share that with students.
  • Be able to choose quality mentor texts, design effective instruction using those texts, and consider how to integrate this effective instruction into current practice.
