Course Description

It feels harder than ever for teachers to build a healthy work/life balance.  The risk of teacher burn-out is real.  In this course we will use the framework of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to systematically learn about the various levels of daily self-care that a person needs to be able to be fully present and effective when caring for others.  You will become familiar with numerous strategies and get to select ones that you want to implement in your life.  By the end of the course you will be well on your way to establishing new habits that will allow you to be the best version of yourself in the classroom as well as all the other areas of your life.

Learner Outcomes

Through reading Take Time for You: Self Care Action Plans for Educators students will do an in-depth study of their self-care needs using Maslow’s framework the Hierarchy of Needs.  By the end of the course students will understand each level of need and have implemented strategies will improve their ability to meet them:

  • Physiological needs (diet, exercise, sleep)
  • Safety needs (being safe AND feeling safe)
  • Belonging needs (professionally and personally)
  • Esteem needs (self-thought and self-talk)
  • Self-actualization needs (peak-experiences, happiness)
  • Transcendence needs (inspiration, gratitude, mindfulness, altruism)

Course is self-paced. Completion time: up to one year from date of enrollment.
