Course Description

This is an introductory course designed to highlight works of art in the Frye Art Museum Collections and special exhibitions and to present topics in the history of Western art. Lectures will introduce extraordinary works of art and the circumstances that produced them. Students will gain a better understanding of visual art, artists, patrons, and the culture of their times.

Learner Outcomes

The participant will acquire a vocabulary for discussing Western art and will acquire a basic understanding of several art historical periods and cultural manifestations. These will include but are not limited to ancient Greece, early modern Europe (Renaissance Italy; Baroque Dutch Republic), Edo period Japan, late 19th-century Europe (France and Finland), and 20th-century America; students will gain a better understanding of visual art, artists, patrons, and the culture of these times.

Notes

This course can either be taken for credit or clock hours. Clock hours are available under CEU 2031.
